Abstract

A decentralised resource sharing environment has been a key strategic initiative of the National Library of Canada for many years. The use of open system communication and ISO standards is a one of the cornerstones of this vision of Canadian library service. This article provides a brief summary of Canadian Z39.50 implementation activities and the major role played by the National Library of Canada. The achievements and findings of the virtual Canadian union catalogue (vCuc) pilot project are highlighted.
