Abstract

Our study analysed the roe deer management practices in the Bánokszentgyörgyi Forestry of Zalaerdő Zrt. For the analysis we collected and processed harvest and estimation data, trophy evaluation results and used databases of biotic and abiotic factors. Time series analyses were conducted to explore the factors affecting the quality characteristics of roe deer trophies. By understanding these processes, we sought to highlight management options for improving deer trophy quality in hilly forested habitats. Our results showed that the best trophy quality in the area was observed at ages 5, 6, and 7 years. No differences were found between these ages. Over the 20 years of the study, there was a verifiable increase in the trophy weight of young and middle-aged individuals. The effect of average temperature and precipitation during the antler building period on trophy weight was verified for the young age class.
