Abstract
The European small ermine moth, Yponomeuta cagnagella (Hubner), recently established in Ontario, is now known from various localities in New York (new United States record). In eastern North America, this univoltine species feeds chiefly on European spindle tree, Euonymus europaeus L., but also accepts other species of Euonymus . In the European literature, Y. cagnagella is commonly referred to as the spindle ermine moth. Data are presented on its life history and habits, based on study of a New York population. Known locality records for New York and Ontario are given, and information on host preferences, recognition features of the adult and larva, and a hypothesis on the mode of introduction into North America are provided.
