Abstract
This article was compiled following a non-specific blanket statement from a senior trust colleague about the attitudes, behaviours and overall professionalism of operating department practice (ODP) students. This paper considers how the training of students, by the collaborative efforts of both academic and clinical staff, can effectively facilitate and support the best learning opportunities to teach and instil appropriate professional behaviours and attitudes. Using available literature, what constitutes professionalism and some of the associated multiprofessional concepts are discussed. Professionalism can be multifaceted and difficult to measure or assess, furthermore much of what can be considered professional behaviour is not explicitly taught on any health curriculum. Timely, constructive feedback, both in university and during clinical placements, is essential. However, further studies need to be carried out to explore the concept in more depth, especially for operating department practice, where no previous studies appear to have been undertaken.
