Abstract Constantia winds a long scarf around her neck. “How far is it to Rockefeller Center?” “A few blocks.” You pause. “Let’s continue our lessons. Today I want to talk about distances in spacetime. I want to tell you about spacetime intervals, Minkowskian space, and null intervals.” Stooping down, you motion to a little alley next to a jewelry shop that has the words GOING OUT OF BUSINESS on the store front. You whip out a piece of chalk and draw two dots on the sidewalk (Fig. 7.1). “Here is Rockefeller Center, and here is Grand Central Station. In my drawing, both axes represent space. We can define a distance metric in terms of differential movements between Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Station.
