Abstract

While the Internet has brought with it a rising tide of crime, carried out using and exploiting the latest technology, all too often there is nothing new about the motives — the age-old ones of blackmail and extortion. The problems of Internet credit card fraud and email scams in which consumers have been defrauded often make news but much less publicised are incidences of blackmail that involve companies whose networks have been breached and their data stolen. The victims receive a demand from the hackers who threaten to expose the systems’ vulnerabilities and the information if they do not pay up.
