Abstract

You may recall that one of the societal forces upon us at the NCTM 52d Annual Meeting in Atlantic City was the wave of attacks that had been made throughout that year on the mathematics programs in our schools. Among the questions we asked were, “Have we been responsible for a ‘lost generation’ in mathematics? Where have we failed? What should be our next steps?” There was cause for reflection, assessment, and renewed commitment.
