Abstract
As the turn of the century approached, the British, well-ensconced all along the southern face of the Himalayas, resolved to open up trade relations with Tibet. As the British realized that their objective to enhance trade with Tibet could not be realized by conducting negotiations with the Qing court, they began to explore direct trans-Himalayan contacts. The Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, resolved to send Colonel Francis Younghusband, a career adventurer and colonial diplomat, to Tibet in order to open up commercial and diplomatic contacts. Both Shakabpa and Younghusband acknowledge that the suspicions between the British and the Tibetans were enhanced in part by relations the Tibetans maintained with Russia.
