Abstract

The present study reports the course of self-change of Israeli lower clas high-school-dropout females. These young women were part o a special project combining military service with semiskilled work in state hospitals. Toward the end of their military service, they participated in an educational upgrading program, administered by the Israeli army. The first part of this report describes the three stages, of the process of self-change by analyzing the young women's subjective accounts of the process. The second part presents a conceptual analysis of the process of self-change, suggesting that personal change had been facilitated by three transactions between the individual and some aspect of the military system.
