Abstract

Those involved with the development of sport for young people will be aware that despite considerable interest in the topic, there is very little hard data on basic questions such as the ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ of participation. Young People’s Involvement in Sport provides this information, based on data collected from 2,400 lengthy face-to-face interviews with children aged 7–16, 600 activity diaries, and focus groups with elite performers, coaches and parents. The book offers a comprehensive picture of young people’s involvement in sport and physical activity in the 1990s and a benchmark against which development into the next millennium can be measured.
