Abstract
abstract A major challenge that confronts South Africa is the increasing percentage of its population, especially young women, being infected with HIV daily. This article looks at how young researchers develop an understanding of the influence of gender and the spread of HIV through critical and reflexive engagement with the data that they have gathered. The article is based on a study that used the principles of feminist theory to focus on gender roles and the related issues of power and risky behaviour among young people. It discusses how young researchers' perceptions of gender become transformed through the process of engaging with photovoice inquiry.
