Abstract

A 19-year-old woman with a prior induced abortion presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal pain. Her last menstrual period was 6 weeks ago. Her blood pressure was 115/67 mm Hg and pulse rate was 108 beats/min; furthermore, she had obvious rebound tenderness. A urine pregnancy test yielded a positive result, and therefore, the emergency physician performed transvaginal ultrasonography (Figures 1 and 2).
