An indistinct figure, more shadow than human in form, appeared in the dream of a certain person. Who is it? the dreamer asked. am Murasaki Shikibu. Because I assembled such a pack of lies and led the hearts of my readers astray, I have been cast into hell and the pain is more than I can bear. So as to relieve my anguish, pray have people compose poems on each and every chapter of The Tale of Genji, including in them the name and the chant 'Namo Amida Butsu.' Whereupon the dreamer asked, Just how should one go about composing such poems? She replied:
