Abstract

In the run-up to the 1978 World Cup, the West German section of Amnesty International launched a campaign called ‘Yes to Football, No to Torture!’ which sought to raise awareness of human rights violations in Argentina by taking advantage of the popularity of the XI World Cup. This article demonstrates that the Football Federation (Deutsches Fussball Bund) and its president Hermann Neuberger, in connivance with the West German Government, actively opposed one of the first large-scale human rights campaigns in 1970s West Germany, but were unable to prevent its success. ‘Yes to Football, No to Torture!’ sparked a significant discussion on the relationship of sports and politics, and rallied tens of thousands of people for the cause of human rights violations in Argentina.
