Abstract

Color is an organoleptic feature that affects a consumer’s decisions and preferences. Colour is usually measured by instruments such as spectrophotometers and colourimeters. With computer vision advancement, the study aims to propose a Yellowness Index (YI) measurement model using MATLAB mobile. Eighty-four yellowness colour charts were prepared and four images are captured from each colour chart for lux values of 50, 500, 1000, and 1500, respectively. Based on the 336 images captured, the Red Green Blue (RGB) information was extracted and the XYZ and YI were simulated. The simulated YI is compared with the actual YI obtained from the information given by the manufacturer of colour chart. YI is also measured from the same color chart using colourimeter with D65/10° according to ASTM E313-00. The measured YI is compared with the actual YI as well. The average percent error between simulated and actual YI is 19.01%, 16.21%, 18.83%, and 13.14% for four different lux values. The percent error is lower in comparison with the percent error between measured YI from the colourimeter device and actual YI, which is 23.91%. Thus, the developed YI simulation model simulated YI with better accuracy as compared to the existing colorimeter. As the developed model is integrated into MATLAB mobile, the developed YI measurement model is portable and the developed model has a lower cost as compared to the colorimeter.
