Abstract
UK Schools Minister Jacqui Smith MP announced that the academic year 2001-2002 is going to be the `Year of Science'. This follows on from this year's `Year of Maths'. As part of this the UK Government has announced the establishment of a Science Ambassadors Programme where top science students will form links with their old school or college, to provide coaching and mentoring. This scheme will be particularly aimed at schools from which few students go on to study science and engineering.
