Abstract

The emission cross section for 2 F 5/2– 2 F 7/2 transition of Yb 3+ ion has been determined from absorption and emission measurements of tellurogermanate glasses at room temperature. By systematic variations in the spectroscopic properties with composition, a glass composition with emission cross section more than 2.30 pm 2 and fluorescence lifetime longer than 0.60 ms is obtained and has advantage over some excellent laser glasses reported in published papers.
