Abstract
Optical-grade KTA crystals doped with Yb 3+ have been grown from self-fluxes by the TSSG-pulling method. It has been found that the doping level can reach 0.1 wt%. The Yb segregation coefficient has been estimated of about 0.2. The intensive luminescence in the range near 1 μm has been demonstrated showing typical Yb 3+ line-type structure. Formation of two types of Yb 3+ defects similar in parameters is likely to be a result of Ti(1) and Ti(2) substitution in KTA lattice. The probable mechanisms of charge compensation in the Yb doping process have been discussed.
