Abstract

A leading figure in Iranian studies, Persian literature and Iranian linguistics, Ehsan Yarshater was born on April 3, 1920 in Hamedân, Western Iran. He studied Persian language and literature, and got a Ph.D. in Persian language and literature in 1947 from Tehran University. His dissertation dealt with Persian poetry under the Timurid Shahrukh (15th century). In the same year, he went to the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, and studied pre-Islamic Iranian languages and culture with W. B. Henning.
