Abstract

This paper presents the results of a numerical study to understand the behavior of Elliptical Hollow Section (EHS) columns at elevated temperatures. A large number of numerical studies have been carried out using the non-linear finite element software ABAQUS v6.14-1 to investigate the influence of slenderness, initial applied load level and axial restraint stiffness on the fire resistance of EHS steel columns at high temperatures. The uniform temperature distribution is assumed. The Finite Element simulation results have been compared with the calculation results using the Eurocode EN 1993-1-1 and Turkish design guide equations in order to check whether the current design method is safe or not. It has been found that the current method for calculating critical temperatures of axially restrained EHS steel column is unsafe. Therefore, a new simple design method has been introduced.
