Abstract

Abstract yeats, william butler (1865–1939): Irish poet and playwright, born Sandymount, Ireland; died Roquebrune, France. Yeats was the son of John Butler Yeats, a former lawyer and artist. The family relocated to England (1867–80). Yeats was devoted to the study of Irish lore and spent considerable time researching it at the British Museum. Greatly interested in mythology and mysticism, Yeats eschewed organized religion. His first major poem, The Wanderings of Oisin, was published in 1889 (see *Ossian). He helped to found the Irish National Theatre Society, where he worked with J. M. *Synge.
