Abstract

Ystorya Bown o Hamtwn (The story of Bevis of Hampton) is the Middle Welsh prose adaptation of the Anglo‐Norman verse romance Boeve de Haumtone . It is transmitted in two medieval manuscripts, the White Book of Rhydderch ( Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch , c. 1350) and the Red Book of Hergest ( Llyfr Coch Hergest , soon after 1382), and was probably translated in the second half of the thirteenth century. It reproduces the plot and the worldview of its source, but is comprehensively rewritten on the levels of narrative structure and style, in order to accommodate it to native literary conventions and the expectations of its new audience, even if from time to time the redactor replicated idioms of his source.
