Abstract
Summary It is shown how the energy spectrum of a frequency modulated wave may be calculated approximately when the energy spectrum and the statistical distribution of amplitude in time of the modulating wave are known. The modulating wave is replaced by a synthetic wave- form, which has the same energy spectrum and the same distribution of amplitude in time as the modulating wave, and from which the side-band spectrum can be calculated. The asymptotic nature of the side-band spectrum for very small and for very large deviation ratios is demonstrated. For very small deviation ratios the shape of the side-band spectrum is determined wholly by the energy spectrum of the modulating wave, and for very large deviation ratios wholly by the distribution of amplitude in time in the modulating wave. Examples of spectra for modulation by telephonic signals are given.
