Abstract

ForewordThis issue of J. Phys. Conf. Series contains the proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on the Jahn-Teller Effect, with the subtitle: “Electron-vibration phenomena in molecules and solids: Symmetry breaking and beyond”. The conference took place in Santander (Spain), June 24-30, 2018, with the attendance of over 60 scientists d involved in these problems. More information on the symposium program can be found at https://www.electronvibrational-jt18.unican.es.Begun in 1976, these symposia have historically focused on the coupling between electronic and nuclear motions in molecules and solids under conditions of electronic degeneracy and pseudodegeneracy, when the Jahn-Teller and Pseudo Jahn-Teller effects are operative. In recent years, the scope of these meetings expanded into a broader range of strong vibronic and electron-phonon couplings that influence a vast physical and chemical phenomena. In this respect, the symposium addressed a wide range of experimental observation, theoretical modeling, and computer simulation of physical and chemical phenomena associated with strongly correlated electronic and nuclear motions. In addition to the basic treatment of the Jahn-Teller and pseudo Jahn-Teller effects and their influence on in structural, spectroscopy, photochemistry, ferroelectricity, and superconductivity properties of polyatomic systems, other related phenomena, like topological effects and molecular magnetism, were also discussed.The rich multidisciplinary background of the attendance produced involving discussions, touching on many novel concepts that, without doubt, will be stimulating for the participants, and enriching of the field as a whole
