Abstract

Abstract An emended description is given of the Lower Cretaceous brachiopod “Rhynchonella” gibbsiana (J. de C. Sowerby) and the type specimen illustrated. Although widely quoted from the European Aptian, the species, as redefined, occurs only from the neighbourhood of Folkestone, Kent, where it is rare in the Lower Albian (Leymeriella tardefurcata zone). A common Aptian species, generally confused with “R.” gibbsiana, is described from the Lower Greensand of Hythe, Kent, as Sulcirhynchia hythensis, sp. nov. A brief description of “Rhynchonella” Leightonensis Walker from the Lower Albian (L. tardefurcata zone) of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, is included for comparison.
