Abstract
Summary Normal modes and frequency of thickness vibration are given in the mathematical expressions, and the special problems about the quartz plates are dealt with. In quartz, the X-cut plate is the only one that can realize the longitudinal thickness vibration. Plates cut parallel to the electrical axis vibrate always in the pure shear mode.
