Abstract

X-ray L111 absorption discontinuities of neodymium, samarium and gadolinium in the pure metals and in NdCo5, SmCo5 and GdCo5 respectively have been studied using a 40cm Cauchois type bent (mica) crystal X-ray spectrograph. It is observed that the L111 absorption discontinuities of the rare earths in the compounds shift towards the high energy side. The chemical shifts have been correlated with the charges on the absorbing atoms.
