Abstract

We prepared La-doped Bi 2Sr 2CaCu 2O y (La-doped Bi-2212) single crystals by a self-flux method, and investigated them by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As a result, we obtained XPS spectra from the air-cleaved surface of the La-doped Bi-2212 single crystals, which have nearly clean surfaces, for the first time. With increasing La concentration in the single crystals, the XPS spectra of Sr 3d and Cu 2p 3/2 core levels from the air-cleaved surface of single crystal changed, and simultaneously the relative intensity ratio of Cu 2p 3/2 satellite (about 943 eV) to main (about 934 eV) peaks became large. Therefore, the chemical bond natures of Sr and Cu changed by adding La into the Bi-2212 single crystal. This indicates that La may occupy Sr site in a Bi-2212 superconductor.
