Abstract

To determine short-range order in a β-brass-type structure, measurements have been made on βAgZn. Using crystal monochromated CuKα and a single crystal of βAgZn held at 330°C, measurements were made of the diffuse scattering throughout a sufficient volume in reciprocal space. The low intensity of the short-range order peak, relative to the temperature diffuse scattering, makes it difficult to obtain accurate short-range order intensities. A Fourier analysis gave values for the first five short-range order coefficients a i = −0.31, +0.27, +0.14, −0.08 and +0.06. The value of a 1 corresponds to 5.2 unlike and 2.8 like atoms as nearest neighbors.
