Abstract

Laue, rotation, and Weissenberg photographs were taken of unirradiated and heavily irradiated (1.1 Mev γ-rays) crystals of silver permanganate. Electron density profiles show that within experimental error, no displacement of silver or manganese atoms occurs during irradiation. It is suggested that ionization and bond rupture of the MnO4-group takes place during irradiation. The Laue and rotation photographs taken at different stages of thermal decomposition support the mechanism previously advanced for the decompositions.
