Abstract

AbstractThe irradiation effects in KCl doped with Eu2+ have been studied by measuring the optical absorption and EPR spectra. Exposure to X‐rays at room temperature and dry ice temperature leads to a decrease in the intensity of the absorption bands and the EPR lines of Eu2+. The decrease in Eu2+ is partially recovered by F‐bleaching at room temperature. Conversion of the Eu2+ to Eu3+ by trapping a hole at room temperature and dry ice temperature and the conversion of the Eu3+ to Eu2+ by trapping an electron at room temperature is suggested. X‐irradiation at liquid nitrogen temperature produced higher concentration of the Hayes‐Nichols centre than the X‐irradiation at dry ice temperature. This difference in the formation rate of the Hayes‐Nichols centre is attributed to the difference in the Eu2+ concentration at two different temperatures. A plausible model for the Hayes‐Nichols centre is suggested.
