Abstract

XPS measurement of the effect of xanthate adsorption on galena samples treated with de-oxygenated and oxygenated xanthate solutions have been made. Spectra of the Pb 4f, S 2P, C 1s and O 1s levels were recorded. Reference spectra of potassium ethyl xanthate and untreated galena samples were also obtained; these spectra were compared with previous results reported in the literature. In oxygenated solutions, the surface selvedge O 1s peak of galena has been altered by xanthate. Binding energies are such that there is evidence for a new surface compound on the galena surface. This is discussed in terms of interactions between the adsorbed intermediates of the O 2 reduction reaction and of the xanthate oxidation process. Implications for in situ flotation are discussed.
