Abstract

Turtles are the most highly developed group among the reptiles, to be represented by six different species in Liberia. A true giant among the sea turtles is the Leatherback Sea Turtle ( Dermochelys coriacea ). Mainly in the lower courses of the rivers, in the swamp region and especially on the sand banks in front to the rivers' mouths, crocodiles are common enough. Among the smaller species of lizard, Agama colonorum ( Agama agama, Red-headed Agama ) is certainly the most common. Liberia is home to a large species of centipede ( Scolopendra ), which is much feared by both the Liberians and the natives. Its bite, although not lethal, is nevertheless very painful and potentially dangerous. The crustaceans of Liberia are represented almost exclusively by crabs, which catch our attention partly because of both their abnormal shapes and their beautiful colouration.
