Abstract

This series of experiments were carried out in order to elucidate the effects of organic acids on the calcium metabolism in shell-fishes, the present papar, deals with the qualitative and quantitative analyse of organic acids in each tissue of pearl oyster and fresh water pearl oyster. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) By papar partition chromatography, the existence of acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, malic acid, α-ketoglutaric acid, pyruvic acid and the trace of fumaric acid were confirmed for each tissue of pearl oyster, and a considerable amount of fumaric acid and the preceding organic acids except malic acid were found in each tissue of fresh water pearl oyster (see Tables 2 ?? 4). 2) By means of silica gel coloumn chromatography, it was found that the amounts of organic acids were about 220mg.% in the mantle, 216mg.% in the gills, 179mg.% in the viscera and 173mg.% in the adductor muscle of pearl oyster, and 220mg.% in the adductor muscle, about 200mg.% in the mantle and gills, 121mg.% in the viscera of fresh water pearl oyster, respectively. 40 ?? 75 per cent of organic acids in each tissue was proved to be acetic acid. 3) From Figure 1, it is noticeable that the diurnal variation of the concentration of organic acids in the soft tissues of pearl oyster was found such as lactic acid in the adductor muscle increases about twice in the night (19 ?? 35mg%) compared with that in the daytime (12 ?? 20mg.%).
