Abstract

The 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party began on 16 October 2022. China’s leader, General Secretary Xi Jinping, appointed a leadership team for the next five years with limited input from other senior party members and with the primary requirement for membership being loyalty to him and a willingness to implement his policies with little resistance. As a result of the congress, Xi looks set to lead China for an unprecedented third term and possibly beyond.
