Abstract

Introduction. Xerostomia represents a decreasing in saliva secretion which leads to a number of side effects in the oral cavity, such as impairing taste perception, chewing failure, burning symptoms or a high DMF-T score. Material and method. Six patients with low saliva flow rate were investigated through a complete clinical examination and by answering to a standardized questionnaire for assessing xerostomia (XQ Michigan). Also, the saliva flow rate was measured and the saliva samples were tested for pH value, buffering capacity score, the amount of streptococci and IgA. Results. The mean score for XQ questionnaire was 34. The most frequently found clinical signs of xerostomia were: lack of saliva on the mouth floor, positive mirror test and coated tongue. Conclusions. Even the sample was poor, the investigation methods used were expensive and complex focusing on three directions: questionnaire, clinical examination and non-clinical tests.
