Abstract

A simple reliable theoretical model for the calculation of total photo-absorption cross sections by atomic nuclei has been presented and applied it to get the relevant data needed for the evaluation of the production rate of 123I radionuclide isotope. Since experimental measurements are not available, the model calculation represents the only source of information. The present results, based on an accurate model of nuclear structure, are in very good agreement with the observed photoabsorption cross sections of Te isotopes, which provide reliable cross sections for the neighboring Xe nuclei, where the usual simple estimates are clearly discordant.
