Abstract

The sum rule derived for linear dichroism in X-ray absorption is applied to La 2−xSr xCuO 4 to obtain quantitative, model-independent information about the out-of-plane character of 3d-holes. The interest of measuring both the L 3 and L 2 edges to perform similar XAS sum-rule analysis in higher-T c cuprates is discussed.
