Abstract
We investigated the magnetic phase transition of the Laves phases, which shows the multiple magnetic phase transition, by using X-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). XAS-MCD measurements were performed around the Fe-K and L 2,3 edges. The magnet-optical sum rule was applied to XAS and MCD spectra of L 2,3 edges. The orbital and spin magnetic moment were estimated respectively. The orbital magnetic moment increased abruptly below the magnetic phase transition temperature. The spin magnetic moment had no abrupt change at the magnetic phase transition temperature. This shows that there is a strong correlation between the multiple magnetic phase transition and the orbital magnetic moment. (© 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
