Abstract

X ANTHOMA of the stomach is a rare disease. Xanthomas of the joints, skin, mesentery and tendon sheaths’ have been reported but it has not been possible to find references in the current Iiterature concerning this tumor Iocated in the stomach. Xanthomatous disease is divided usuaIIy into primary and secondary xanthomatosis. Primary xanthomatosis is manifested by the appearance of muItipIe xanthomas on the skin or eIsewhere? and, aIso, a hyperchoIesteroIemia is present. Secondary xanthomatosis may be further divided into xanthoma tumor formation which occurs in organs foIIowing inff ammation, granuIomas or malignant change with xanthomatous formation. Some authors beIieve that an aIteration of intraceIIuIar Iipid metaboIism occurs,B with resuhant xanthoma formation IocaIIy. In these cases the bIood choIestero1 is normal and there are no systemic signs of xanthoma formation. In the cases of IocaIized xanthoma formation observed by Thannhauser there is no miIky serum or hyperIipemia and this process is thought by him to be the resuIt of a IocaI ceIIuIar disturbance. Because of the paucity of tumors of this kind being found in the stomach, it was deemed of interest to record a case of fibroxanthoma of the stomach.
