Abstract

We present the results of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the intermetallic Kondo antiferromagnet CePtSn just above the Néel temperature under a magnetic field. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and XMCD spectra at the Ce L 2,3-edges confirm the trivalent valence state of cerium in this compound. The observation of the XMCD signal at the Pt L 2,3-edges indicates that the 5d states of Pt are involved in the magnetic interactions in CePtSn.
