Abstract

In this study, a new X-ray approach was applied to quantify the second-phase precipitates in the friction-stir welded 2519-T820 aluminum alloy. It was found that the stir zone material contained a significant fraction of secondary phases, including the non-equilibrium θ′ and θ″ ones. Based on this result, it was concluded that the widely accepted concept of FSW-induced precipitation phenomena is oversimplified and requires revision.
