Abstract
Pure niobium powder was milled in a SPEX 8000 mill using hardened steel balls for 1 to 6 h. The X-ray diffraction peaks were analyzed using the Fourier Line Shape and Integral Breadth analysis techniques. The crystallite size decreased to 2.3 nm after 6 h of milling and a high degree of isotropy was observed in both the effective crystal size and microstrains. This behavior is significantly different from the bulk Nb metal, which is anisotropic.
