Abstract

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is applied to study the outer layer composition of the fine fraction in L1639 and L1613 Luna 16 regolith samples up to a depth of ∼7000 A. It is found that Fe0 and Fe3+ are present in the samples, which provides a discussion of a new mechanism for the formation of metallic iron and its oxidized form under impact action.
