Abstract

The X-ray properties of the galaxy cluster population are reviewed with evidence that clusters form a nearly self-similar class of objects. The use of the cluster X-ray luminosity function to constrain cosmological models and the assessment of the large-scale structure by means of the X-ray cluster distribution is discussed.
