Abstract
Direct electromagnetic stimulation of transverse-optical phonons in quartz has been accomplished by irradiation with a ${\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$ laser, and experimentally observed through enhancement of x-ray diffuse scattering due to zone-center and zone-boundary phonons.
