Abstract A highly hydrolyzed solution of iron(III) chloride is investigated by X-ray diffraction. The occurrence of six O atoms in the first coordination shell of iron(III) is demonstrated. The structural similarity of hydrolyzed solutions of Fe(III) chloride and nitrate is pointed out.
