Abstract

A computer-controlled x-ray diffractometer is a relatively inexpensive analytical tool which is easy to use and applicable to a wide range of geologic problems. Both qualitative and quantitative experiments are possible. The simple theory behind the technique and the ease of operation allows it to be used in courses at all levels of the geological curriculum. Exercises can easily be custom tailored to local geology. The instrument is ideal for small departments with limited resources that wish to provide hands-on analytical experiences to undergraduates.
