Abstract
This chapter presents an overview on the Christianity in Al-Ḥīra. It discusses the origin of Christianity on the Area of the Sassanid Empire. Since Al-Ḥīra culturally and politically belongs to the part of the environment of the Sassanian Empire, the history of Christianity there has to be considered in the context of the Persian Church history. An important factor for the increase of the Christian population in the Sassanid Empire was the extensive deportations of Christian prisoners of war in the middle of the 3rd century. The spread of Christian communities in the Sassanid Empire was accompanied by an institutional anchor. The Christian communities in the vicinity of Al-Hirah are thus considered as the result of the deportations of Western Christians and the mission of Mesopotamian Christians from the North. The chapter discusses the monasteries and churches in the Al-Ḥīra.
