Abstract

Abstract To reach a broad acceptance for the OSI directory service it is necessary to offer well designed human interfaces to Directory User Agents (DUAs) tailored to the requirements of specific user groups. We described the implementation of a light-weight DUA called ITAXA (Interface To An X.500 Agent) to provide easy access to the OSI directory for non-technical users. The interface is embedded in the typical computing environment of our audience. It uses the similarity between the OSI directory and the usual telephone directory as well as an equivalence between the Directory Information Tree (DIT) and a hierarchical local file system to simplify the usage of the directory services for non-technical users.
